Three Nittany Lions Make Second Team All-ECAC Men's Lacrosse Team
Team Awards Also Handed Out
State College, Pa. - May 16, 2000 - Three members of the Penn State men's lacrosse team were named to the All-ECAC Men's Lacrosse second team as announced by the Eastern College Athletic Conference today. Midfielder Eric Wood (Deferiet, N.Y.), defender Mike Herscha (Syracuse, N.Y.) and goalkeeper Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md.) all earned the honors. Wood, a junior, was third on the team in scoring with 32 points off 14 goals and 18 assists while classmate Herscha, a key defender for the Nittany Lions, had five points off three and five. Freshman keeper Garrity had a 63% save percentage, allowing 52 goals and collecting 90 saves in 10 games played. Penn State also handed out its team awards at its recent team banquet. Herscha took home the Andrew Lockhart Award for top defensive player. Junior defender Carson Yoder (Lutherville, Md.) won the Nick Thiel Award for most improved player while senior Don Mayerhofer (Rockville Center, N.Y.) won the George Pittinger Award as most valuable senior. Sophomore attackman Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y.) won the Top Scorer Award with 28 goals while junior midfielder Mike Kern (Columbus, Ohio) was named Most Valuable Player. The Nittany Lions also named their captains for the 2001 season, with Wood, Kern, Jan Northrop (Burke, Va.) and Ted Holmes (Flourtown, Pa.) getting the nod. Penn State went 7-7 this past season, 3-3 in its first season of ECAC play.
