UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. -- The seventh-seeded Penn State men's lacrosse team (12-3, 3-2 Big Ten) will open play for the 2017 NCAA tournament with a familiar foe in the Towson Tigers (10-4, 4-1 CAA) on Saturday, May 13, at noon at the Penn State Lacrosse Field.
Tickets for general admission are $8, with tickets for students and children costing $5 each. Fans can purchase tickets in advance by calling 1-800-NITTANY or going to the ticket office, located in the Bryce Jordan Center. Tickets will also be sold at the gate the day of, but only cash payments will be accepted. Groups of 20 or more can purchase group tickets for the discounted price of $3 each.
Penn State, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, earns an at-large bid to the tournament after tying the program record for wins in a season with 12 in 2017. The bid marks Penn State's fourth NCAA tournament appearance, with the team also making the field in 2003, 2005 and 2013.
The Nittany Lions and Tigers are no strangers to one another, with the two competing in the Colonial Athletic Association together from 2010 to 2014. Penn State is 8-14 all-time against the Tigers, but holds a 4-1 record when taking on Towson during head coach Jeff Tambroni's tenure.
The winner of the Penn State-Towson matchup will face the winner of Syracuse-Yale the following weekend. Penn State holds a 12-46-1 record all-time against the Orange all-time, with the last meeting occurring in 1986. Penn State is 1-2 all-time against Yale, last facing the Bulldogs in the 2013 NCAA tournament.
Penn State enters the tournament coming off a historic regular season. In addition to tying the program's single-season wins record, the Nittany Lions' 10-0 start was the best in program history. Individually, senior Nick Aponte climbed to eighth place on the career assists leaderboard, while freshman Mac O'Keefe set the rookie goal-scoring record with 48 goals and sits two shy of the program's single-season record.
