The Lion Lacrosse Team Defeats Fairfield In Close Game

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - April 28, 2001 -- #17 Penn State defeated Fairfield today 9-8 in sudden death overtime.

Fairfield's Marc Torrey scored the first goal of the game unassisted at 14:06 in the first quarter. Penn State senior Tim Emmick (Corning, N.Y.) answered the Stags' first goal with one of his own off of an assist from sophomore Luke Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa.). Senior captain Ted Holmes (Flourtown, Pa.) gave the Lions their first lead for the day after scoring an unassisted goal with 6:08 left to go in the first quarter. Each team notched another goal in the first, followed by a trio of goals by the Stags with under a minute. Fairfield led the game at the end of the first quarter 5-3.

The Lions scored first in the second quarter. Junior Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y.) assisted by senior Randy Kleinman (Broomall, Pa.) scored with 14:00 left in the half. Fairfield's Troy Bamann and Shaun Graham scored goals to bring the score to 4-7 at the half with the Stags retaining the lead.

After the half, the third quarter remained uneventful with Fairfield failing to score over Penn State's defense. Senior Sean Huss (Rochester, N.Y.) off of an assist from Driscoll with 7:19 left in the quarter scored the Lions' only goal of the quarter. The score at the end of the quarter was 7-5 with Fairfield leading.

Penn State dominated the fourth quarter with Ogelsby, Emmick and Kleinman scoring the quarter's first three goals. The Lions' offensive effort tied the game gave the Lions the lead with a score of 8-7. Fairfield's Matt Buecker scored the only Fairfield fourth quarter goal with 1:36 left to play in the game. The fourth quarter ended with a tie score of 8-8.

The two teams battled in sudden death overtime with Penn State's Rob Booth (Gladwyne, Pa.) winning the face-off to give Penn State possession of the ball. A goal by Emmick earned him a hat-trick, and gave the Lions their sixth victory of the season.

Goalie Matt Vallone (Corning, N.Y.) played 30 minutes earning 4 saves and 7 goals against. Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md.) also played 30 minutes for the Lions earning 8 saves and only 1 goal against. Fairfield goalie C.J. Kemp played 60 minutes earning 15 saves and 9 goals against.

This win brings the Lions overall record to 6-6 and 1-4 in the ECAC. Fairfield now stands at 6-7. Penn State's next and final game is May 5 here at Jeffrey Field. The game faces off at 1:00 p.m.
