Men's Lacrosse Upsets No. 3 Virginia 13-8

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - April 27, 2002 - Penn State ended their season on a high note upsetting No. 3 Virginia 13-8. The Lions improved their non-conference record to 7-1 while their overall record improves to (8-5, 1-4). Virginia drops to (9-3, 3-0) with the loss.

Penn State broke Virginia's momentum from the third quarter when Rob Booth (Gladwyne, Pa./Haverford School) scored on an assist from Luke Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford School) to give the Lions a 10-7 advantage. Junior Charlie Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) scored the next two goals unassisted for Penn State to give the Lions a 12-8 lead with 4:30 left in the match. Penn State never looked back as they played solid defense in the last five minutes. Virginia tallied one goal in the quarter coming from Conor Gill unassisted at 5:23 in the period.

After being down 8-2 at halftime, Virginia came out in the third quarter and outscored the Lions 5-1. Cavalier goals included two from Chris Rotelli who completed his hat trick and Joe Yevoli's goal with 4:02 left in the quarter. The Nittany Lion lone goal of the period was an EMO goal from senior captain Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) on an assist from sophomore Rob Bateman (Parkton, Md./Hereford).

The Lions were strong in the second quarter as they outscored Virginia 5-2. Bateman scored two goals in the quarter after capitalizing off of Cavalier turnovers. Freshman Will Jones (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) scored his first goal of the day on an assist from freshman Marc Young (Devon Pa./Haverford School) at the 9:57 mark in the period. The Cavalier goals of the quarter were scored by Chris Rotelli and Brett Hughes, both of which were unassisted.

The Nittany Lions shut out Virginia in the first quarter as they finished the first 15 minutes of the match with a 3-0 advantage. Playing in their final games of their careers senior captains Sean Droogan (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) and Will Driscoll each tacked on a goal in the period to help the Lion cause. Luke Ogelsby finished the day with three assists while containing a game high eight groundballs.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) played all 60 minutes of the match making 12 saves and picking up eight groundballs.
