Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Bucknell 10-7
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - April 16, 2003 - The Penn State men's lacrosse team (5-5, 2-2) held Bucknell (7-4, 3-1) to two goals in the second half en route to their fourth straight victory of the season 10-7. The Lions have now defeated the Bison in six of the last seven meetings. Senior Luke Ogelsby (The Haverford School/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) notched four assists in the match while sophomore Derek Howells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished with the game with a hat trick. Penn State brought a three goal lead into the fourth quarter when freshman Elliot Jones (Bullis School/Potomac, Md.) tacked on a goal to give the Lions a 10-6 advantage. Bucknell answered with a tally from Worthy Sanders to cut the Lions lead to three goals once again. The Nittany Lions controlled the rest of the game using ball-control offense to wear down the clock while the defense limited the Bison to four shots in the quarter. Both teams notched one goal each in the third quarter. Bucknell scored first in the period when Kelly Hogue scored on an acrobatic shot while falling. Seven minutes later, Luke Ogelsby connected with freshman Nate Whitaker (Thomas Jefferson/Alexandria, Va.) for the second time in the match to give the Lions a 9-6 advantage at the end of the quarter. Penn State notched five goals in the second quarter three of which coming from Derek Howells. Senior captain Marshall Feldman (Severn School/Davidsonville, Md.) scored his second goal on the night on an unassisted tally with 10:35 remaining in the quarter. The Bison kept the game close scoring four goals of their own in the second. Chris Cara scored two consecutive goals to cut the Penn State lead to 8-5 heading into halftime. Bucknell notched the first goal of the game when Houge scored on a quick pass from Cara. Penn State then scored three straight goals from Whitaker, Feldman and senior Rob Booth (The Haverford School/Gladwyne, Pa.) to end the first 15 minutes of the match with a 3-1 lead. Senior goal keeper Chris Garrity (St. Mary's/Annapolis, Md.) made six saves on 22 Bucknell shots. At one point in the fourth quarter Garrity made three crucial saves while Bucknell was on an extra-man opportunity.
