Navy Sinks Men's Lacrosse by a Final of 9-7

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - April 12, 2002 - Penn State was handed their fourth consecutive ECAC loss of the season at the hands of the Navy Midshipmen 9-7. The Lions drop to (5-5, 0-4) while Navy improves their record to (6-4, 3-2).

The Nittany Lions made a late comeback in the fourth quarter after being down 7-3 to start the period. Senior Captain Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored three goals in the period and ended with a total of four on the day. Driscoll cut the Midshipmen lead to 9-6 after his goal on an assist from sophomore Edmond Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) at 6:34 in the quarter. Driscoll then scored his fourth goal at 3:31 on an assist from senior captain Sean Droogan (Glen Head, N.Y./Glen Head) to cut Navy's lead to 9-7. The Midshipmen however, played solid defense for the last three minutes of the game preventing any more Lion scoring. Navy scored two goals in the quarter coming from Greg Conklin and Eddie McKinnon.

After coming out of a 2-2 tie at halftime, Navy scored five goals in the third quarter to give them the momentum they needed to play the rest of the second half. Eddie McKinnon tallied two goals while Marshall Croft, Dan Kretz, and Ben Bailey scored the other three for Navy. Driscoll scored the lone goal in the period for the Lions on an assist from sophomore Rob Bateman (Parkton, Md./Hereford). Despite the five goals scored from the Midshipmen, junior goalkeeper Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) made four saves for Penn State in the period.

The game remained close in the first half. Navy's Joe Bossi scored at 4:27 in the period to give the Midshipmen a 2-1 advantage over the Lions. Not even a minute later, Penn State retaliated as Will Jones (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 2-2 going into halftime.

Navy was the first team on the score board when Adam Reel scored his only goal of the match at 7:01. Droogan tacked on a late goal for the Lions on an assist from junior Charlie Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) to end the first quarter with a 1-1 tie.

Garrity played the entire 60 minutes of the match making a total of 13 saves. He also picked up eight groundballs in the outing.
