UMBC Gives Men's Lacrosse Second ECAC Loss 9-8
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - March 23, 2002 - Penn State made a late come back to come within one goal of the UMBC Retrievers however they ran out of time as they were giving their second ECAC loss 9-8. Penn State drops to 3-3, 0-2 in the ECAC while UMBC improves to 2-3, 1-2 in the ECAC. UMBC scored three goals in 50 seconds to take an 8-6 lead over the Lions in the fourth quarter. Pat Muston completed his hat trick in the Retriever rally. With 3:14 left in the match, Adam Shiley scored for UMBC to give them a three-goal lead 9-6. Freshman Marc Young (Devon Pa./Haverford School) scored his second goal of the day for the Lions with 34 seconds remaining in the period. Senior captain Will Driscoll (Fairport N.Y./Fairport) completed his three-goal day when he scored with ten seconds left to cut the UMBC lead to one 9-8. However for Penn State there was not enough time left to complete the comeback. The defense for both teams played well in the beginning of the third quarter. Penn State was able to snap the Retriever protection as they scored three straight goals. The goals included Freshman Mike Jacober (Providence, R.I/Moses Brown School) scoring at 6:04 to tie the match at 4-4. Freshman Will Cutler (Vienna, Va./St. Johns College) scoring on an assist from sophomore Rob Bateman (Parkton, Md./Hereford) to give PSU the lead at 5-4 and Driscoll tallying his second of the day to give the Lions a two-goal advantage 6-4. UMBC scored a late goal in the quarter to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 6-5 going into the fourth period. The second quarter remained even until Shiley scored for UMBC at 6:51 to tie the game at 3-3. Muston scored his second goal of the day to give the Retrievers a 4-3 going into halftime. UMBC scored a quick goal at 10:51 to take an early 1-0 lead. Penn State countered with three goals of their own coming from Young at 9:51, senior captain Tim Emmick (Corning, N.Y./Corning West), and Driscoll which was the only Lion EMO goal of the day. The Nittany Lions took the lead 3-1. Muston tacked on a goal for UMBC to cut the Lion lead to 3-2 going into the second quarter. Junior goalkeeper Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) made 17 saves and played all 60 minutes.
