Hoyas Give Men's Lacrosse First Loss of the Season

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - March 9, 2002 - The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Lions in the ECAC opener 11-10. Penn State falls to 3-1 while the Hoyas remain undefeated at 3-0.

Three minutes into the fourth quarter senior captain Will Driscoll (Fairport N.Y./Fairport) scored his second goal of the day on an assist from junior Luke Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), cutting the Hoya lead to one 8-7. Driscoll then completed the hat trick at 11:48 again on an assist from Ogelsby to tie the game at eight. Georgetown scored two goals in four seconds to go back up two and break the Nittany Lion momentum. Penn State made a late comeback as Driscoll scored his fourth and fifth goals both on assists from Ogelsby to tie the game at ten. Hoya attacker Mike Hammer put the Lions away with his fourth goal at 2:57 to give Georgetown the win, 11-10.

Junior Rob Booth (Gladwyne, Pa./Haverford School) opened the second half scoring an unassisted goal at 12:49 into the third quarter. The teams traded three goals to keep the game tied at six. Georgetown attacker Neal Goldman scored an EMO goal for his second score on the day, which gave Georgetown a 7-6 lead. Hammer completed his hat trick with one minute remaining in the third to put Georgetown up two, 8-6

The Lions came out and scored quickly in the second quarter with a goal from Driscoll. Georgetown then went down two men and PSU took advantage as Ogelsby scored his only goal of the day on an assist from senior captain Tim Emmick (Corning N.Y./Corning) to give the Lions a two-goal lead. Georgetown pressed right back as they scored two goals of their own including an EMO goal to tie the game by Trevor Walker. The teams traded goals late in the quarter; the Nittany Lion goal coming from freshman Will Jones (Washington D.C./DeMatha) to keep the game deadlocked at four.

The first quarter remained evenly matched until Hammer scored his first goal on the day for the Hoyas at 4:15. The Lions tied the game on an unassisted goal from freshman Mike Jacober (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown). Penn State had three extra-man opportunities in the quarter but was not able to capitalize.

Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) played the whole game making 14 saves and allowing 11 goals.

Penn State will host the Cornell Big Red in non-conference action on Mar. 16 at 1:00 p.m. and then will travel to UMBC on Mar. 23.
