Men¡¯s Lacrosse drops ECAC opener to Georgetown 11-9

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ¨C March 8, 2003 ¨C A one-goal Penn State halftime lead was quickly erased in the third quarter as Georgetown scored five goals en route to an 11-9 victory. Senior goal keeper Chris Garrity (St. Mary¡¯s/Annapolis, Md.) made 22 saves on 56 Georgetown shots to keep the Nittany Lions in the match.

Georgetown kept pace with a patient Penn State offense, falling behind 6-5 at the half before storming out to take the lead less than seven minutes into the third quarter.? In the third Georgetown scored five goals, including two from Mike Hammer and Phil Vincenti while the defense shutout Penn State in the quarter only allowing four shots.

Penn State made a game of it late in the fourth quarter as they scored three goals but the Hoyas held fast to claim their first ECAC victory of the season.? Senior captain Marshall Feldman (Severn/Davidsonville, Md.) and freshman John Eremus (The Haverford School/Rosemont, Pa.) both tallied two goals on the day to help the Nittany Lion cause.

Georgetown junior Walid Hajj opened the scoring at 7:06 of the first but Penn State replied with two tallies of its own.? The Hoyas tied it up before two more quick strikes in the final minute of the quarter put the Nittany Lions up 4-2.? Georgetown cut the deficit to one goal at the half before coming out strong to dominate the third.? Up four heading into the fourth quarter, the Hoyas scored the first tally to extend the margin but Penn State¡¯s determined offense scored three times, including a man-up marker with 48 seconds remaining to bring the game to an 11-9 finale.

Penn State was out shot 29-56 and Georgetown was able to win 74% of the face-offs.

The Lions travel to Boca Raton, Fl. to take on the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, March 11. Penn State will then continue their road trip as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell on March 15.
