Men's Lacrosse Defeats Fairfield 14-6
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - March 2, 2002 - The Nittany Lions scored three straight goals on their first three shots of the game, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and didn't look back as they defeated the Stags of Fairfield 14-6 in non-conference action. Senior captains Will Driscoll (Fairport N.Y./Fairport) and Tim Emmick (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) along with junior Charlie Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) all had three goal games. The win improves the Nittany Lion record to 2-0 while Fairfield falls to 1-1.
The Lion defense held Fairfield to one goal all of the way to the fourth quarter as PSU had the lead13-1. Sophomore Greg Hale (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Bridgeton) scored the final goal for the Lions with 6:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. Fairfield scored the only EMO goal of the game, which also was the first one the Lions gave up this season. The Stags also led the scoring in the quarter tallying five of their six goals.
Penn State came out in the second half scoring six goals on all six shots of the third quarter. Freshman Mike Jacober (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) and Charlie Perry both scored two goals each. The two assists in the quarter came from junior Luke Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford School) on Perry's third goal and freshman Jesse Tarr (Media, Pa./Penncrest) assisted Jacober's first goal.
The Nittany Lions scored seven goals in the first half on 20 shots. Driscoll and Emmick took care of all of the scoring in the second quarter while Ogelsby, Driscoll and freshman Will Jones (Washington D.C./DeMatha) each had an assist.
The Stags scored their lone goal in the first half on Matt Buecker's goal from Rob Scipioni, who finished the day with two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) was sharp when needed between the pipes playing all 60 minutes, making nine saves and six goals against.
