" TODAY'S MATCH-UPS
The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team, ranked No. 14 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, will visit No. 12 Notre Dame in the regular season opener for both teams. Penn State is coming off a 2-0-1 exhibition slate in which it tied Johns Hopkins and downed Robert Morris and Lehigh.
The Nittany Lions return 24 lettermen and seven starters from last year's ECAC Lacrosse League co-championship team. Penn State went 9-6 in 2005 and made its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Lions, under the guidance of veteran head coach Glenn Thiel, will be led by co-captains Greg Gurenlian, Nate Whitaker and Keith Benjamin.
Gurenlian sported a .636 face-off percentage last season and led the Nittany Lions with 111 ground balls. Whitaker was the team's leading scorer, notching 44 points off team highs in goals (31) and assists (13). Benjamin started all 15 games last year and was the anchor on Penn State's defense.
Notre Dame is coming off a 7-4 season that saw it finish 3-2 in the Great Western Lacrosse League. The Fighting Irish return 11 starters and 14 lettermen, including two returning honorable mention All-Americans. The Irish are coached by long-time mentor Kevin Corrigan, who is in his 18th year at UND."
