Men's Lacrosse Defeats Ohio State in Season Opener 5-4
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., February 21, 2004 - Senior captain Edmond Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) and sophomore Nate Whitaker (Great Falls, Va./Thomas Jefferson) each tallied two points as the Penn State men's lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0) defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes (0-1, 0-0) in Columbus, Ohio for their first win of the season.
Ohio State opened the fourth quarter scoring two consecutive goals to tie the game 4-4. Senior Greg Hale (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Bridgeton) then broke the tie with his goal at the 5:53 mark in the final quarter to seal the victory for the Lions. Penn State played solid defense for the final five minutes of the game and held of any kind of Ohio State comeback.
Senior Charlie Perry (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) scored the lone goal of the third quarter, unassisted, with 2:26 remaining in the period. The Buckeyes were shutout in the period on 12 shots and an extra-man opportunity.
Penn State dominated the second quarter and held Ohio State scoreless again, as the Buckeyes were only able to notch one shot. Junior Will Jones (Annapolis, Md./Dematha) scored an unassisted goal at 6:19 in the quarter and Whitaker scored his only goal of the day on an assist from Edmond Perry with 2:52 remaining before halftime.
The Nittany Lions were able to strike first in the opening quarter on an unassisted goal from Edmond Perry at the 12:14 mark. Ohio State quickly responded with a goal from Anthony Geraldi four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Tom Randisi then scored a man-up goal for the Buckeyes with 7:42 in the quarter to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening period.
Goal keeper Josh LaGrow (Skaneateles, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) held the Buckeyes scoreless in the second and third quarters and his finished the day with 14 saves, which is a career high.
Penn State will next be in action on Sunday February 29 when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a non-conference match-up. The Lions will continue their road streak when they visit Fairfield, Conn. to battle the Fairfield Stags on March 6.
