Nittany Lion Men¡¯s Lacrosse Team Falls to Denver 10-5 in Season Opener

  • UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ¨C March 17, 2007 ¨C The No. 14-ranked Denver Pioneers scored eight unanswered goals and downed the No. 16 Penn State Nittany Lion men¡¯s lacrosse team 10-5 on Saturday night at Holuba Hall. The teams battled back-and-forth in their first game of the season. Denver scored two goals, Penn State responded with five goals of their own and Denver finished the game with eight straight goals. Junior Michael Goltra finished with two goals and two assists for the Pioneers while sophomore Joey Murray recorded a goal and two assists.

    Denver took a quick 2-0 lead with 12:09 remaining in the first quarter on goals ¨C that were 1:14 apart ¨C by Goltra and Murray. Penn State freshman Chris Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) responded with two goals of his own. He netted his first goal at the 6:28 mark while his second goal ¨C on a man-up opportunity ¨C came on a pass from junior Bubba Scott (Rockville, Md.). Senior Gil Pearsall (Carthage, N.Y.) scored on a pass from senior captain Pat Heim (Wayne, Pa.) to put the Nittany Lions up 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.

    Sophomore Max VanArsdale (Rochester, N.Y.) put the Nittany Lions up 4-2 on an unassisted goal with 14:20 remaining in the half. Then, Scott netted an unassisted goal on a man-up opportunity and stretched the Nittany Lion lead to 5-2. Goltra scored an unassisted goal for the Pioneers with 4:13 remaining and the quarter ended with Penn State leading 5-3.

    Denver scored three goals in a span of 1:45 to take the lead 6-5. The Pioneers never looked back and netted four more goals in the final quarter including two by freshman Illija Gajic.

    Penn State sophomore goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.) and Denver senior goalie Jeb Hollingsworth both looked sharp in net and each finished with seven saves. The Nittany Lions finished 19-27 on clear attempts and 2-11 on man-up opportunities while the Pioneers went 17-27 on clear attempts and 1-6 on man-up opportunities.

    The Nittany Lions (0-1) will host Notre Dame next Sunday, Feburary 25, at 1:00 p.m. in Holuba Hall.
