March 13, 2010
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -
The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team lost a close 7-4 game at Rutgers in non-conference lacrosse action. In a game delayed over two hours due to weather, the Scarlet Knights broke open a close game with a four-goal burst in the third period to seal the win.
With high winds, lightning and driving rain, Rutgers got on the board first when Gerhard Buehning scored at the 12:09 mark. The Nittany Lions answered with a man-up goal from Billy Gribbin (Rockville, Md.) off a Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.) assist with just 1:37 left in the period. The Scarlet Knights opened up a 3-1 lead in the second off goals from Adam Goldberg and Michael Diehl. Mackrides and Gribbin reversed roles for another Lion goal at the 6:50 mark with Mackrides scoring off a Gribbin assist, cutting Rutgers' lead to 3-2 at the break.
Penn State tied the game early in the third quarter, with Gribbin scoring off a Chris Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) assist at the 11:43 mark. But the Scarlet Knights would put the game away with three straight goals to close out the third period. Buehning, Ted Stanwick, Kory Kelly and Diehl each scored, giving RU a 7-3 lead after three periods. Penn State got the only goal of the fourth period, with Hogan scoring off a Billy Lloyd (West Chester, Pa.) assist with 6:22 left in the game.
Rutgers outshot Penn State 35-25 while Penn State won 10 of 13 face-offs. Three of Penn State's four goals were in man-up situations while the Nittany Lions shut RU out on five different man-up situations. Nittany Lion goalie Dave Baker (Havertown, Pa.) had seven saves in the game while Rutgers' Rudy Butler had 11.
Penn State is now 0-5 on the year while Rutgers stands at 3-1. The Nittany Lions will visit No. 10 Duke next Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m.
