Senior Matt Warner heads into his final season having been elected co-captain by his teammates. A fixture on Penn State's defense for the past three seasons, Warner will once again be counted on to anchor Penn State's efforts. A strong and athletic player, Warner has the poise and experience to be one of the ECAC's top short stick defenders in 2009.
LION CAREER:
2008:Warner played in all 14 of Penn State's games last season, starting most of them. He ended the year with a career-high five assists and 23 ground balls. Warner enters his final season as a Nittany Lion having played in all 40 games during his career, with eight points and 54 ground balls.
2007:Warner played in all 13 of Penn state's games, collecting 18 ground balls and taking two shots. Warner upped his career ground ball total to 31 in the process.
2006: Warner played in 13 games for Penn State, starting two. He ended his rookie campaign with three points off a goal and two assists. He took three shots and collected 13 ground balls. Warner got his goal in Penn State's 9-4 win at Hobart.
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL:
Born Sept. 5, 1987...Rookie of the Year as a freshman at Geneva High School, scoring nine goals and 12 assists...58 points as a sophomore with 18 goals and 40 assists...first team all-league in lacrosse and football as a junior with 26 goals and 43 assists...league and team MVP in football as a senior, lacrosse MVP as well with 38 goals and 45 assists...GHS Athlete of the Year...also played basketball...son of James and Diann Warner...four brothers (all younger), John, Jimmy, Mike and Joe...supply chain major at PSU.
COACHES VIEW:
Matt will assume the ssdm roll from Andrew Mackrides. While not as fast, Matt has size, experience, and great footwork at the short stick position. If he can learn to anticipate Drew a bit better, Matt should be dangerous in transition."
