May 22, 2014
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's hockey team will open the second season of Big Ten play at Michigan Nov. 21-22 as part of its 20-game league schedule announced by the Big Ten Thursday morning. The Nittany Lions will play four games against each conference opponent with two games both at home and on the road.
After their league-opening series against the Wolverines, the Nittany Lions will continue Big Ten play Dec. 5-6 when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to face the Badgers. Penn State will then wait five weeks before its next conference series when it hosts Ohio State at Pegula Ice Arena Jan. 9-10.
The Nittany Lions will host the Buckeyes and Michigan State (Jan. 16-17) back-to-back weekends before welcoming Wisconsin to Happy Valley Feb. 6-7. The Nittany Lions will then alternate between home and road series the rest of the season.
While on the road, Penn State will visit Michigan State the weekend of Feb. 13, playing either a Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday series, while its road trip at Ohio State will take place either Feb. 27-28 or Feb.28-March 1. Dates for the two series, as well as the Nittany Lions' home matchups against Minnesota (Feb. 19-20 or Feb. 20-1), will be announced at a later date.
Following its series against Ohio State, Penn State will host Michigan March 6-7 before concluding the regular season at Minnesota March 13-14.
After the regular season, all six Big Ten teams will compete in the 2015 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament, to be held at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena March 19-21. During the quarterfinal round, the No. 3 seed will face the No. 6 seed, while the No. 4 seed will battle the No. 5 seed.
The Big Ten's top seed will then face the winner of the matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in one semifinal, while the No. 2 seed will play either the No. 3 or No. 6 seed winner in the second semifinal. The two semifinal winners will play for the Big Ten title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Game times, as well as the Nittany Lions' full 2014-15 schedule, will be announced at a later date.
