UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- Penn State came from behind to upset defending national champion Michigan on Friday for the Nittany Lions first NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship since 1976.

Penn State defeated Michigan 231.975 to 231.850.

Penn State was in fourth place before the final rotation behind Iowa, Michigan, and California, but a score of 39.075 on the pommel horse pushed the Lions up front.

Senior Brandon Stefaniak (Apolla, Pa.) earned a near-perfect 9.950 Friday on the horse tying four others for first place.

"It means everything," said Stefaniak. "Especially for me; it was my last meet. I'm a senior and I was the last to go up and put my routine on the line."

This is Penn State's 10th title since 1938. Iowa took third place with 231.525 points. The individual champions will be determined Saturday.
