Men's Gymnastics Defeated Santa Barbara at Southwest Cup
TEMPE, Ariz., March 2, 2002 - No. 3 Penn State men's gymnastics defeated UC-Santa Barbara at the Southwest Cup in Tempe, Ariz., last Sunday, 215.950-208.400. Junior Kevin Donohue (Saddle River, N.J.) claimed his fifth all-around title in seven meets this season, while sophomore Kevin Tan (Fremont, Calif.) claimed the seventh rings title of the year.
Entering the weekend, Donohue was the top-ranked all-arounder in the country for the fourth-straight week, while Tan was rated second in the country after spending the year at No. 1.
Donohue recorded three first-place showings, winning the floor, parallel bars and high bar. He was also second on vault with a score of 0.150. Donohue's 9.150 on parallel bars was a season high.
Tan outdistanced the competition earning a 9.700 on rings. His performance on high bar also garnered a career-high score of 9.150 for third place.
Junior Matt Abboud (Dayton, Maine) placed third in the all-around after tying a career high on the vault (9.200) and recording a season-best 9.000 on high bar. He posted a second-place showing on vault and was third on parallel bars.
The Nittany Lions had one of the best meets of the season recording season-high marks on rings (36.550), vault (36.550), parallel bars (35.400) and high bar (36.750), en route to recording the second-highest score of the season. Eight different Lions earned 10 career-high marks contributed to Penn State's winning performance.
Penn State will participate in a tri-meet hosted by Navy on Saturday, Mar. 9. The Midshipmen also host Southern Connecticut State.
