Vargas to Compete in VISA American Cup

STATE COLLEGE, PA.- February 27, 2004 - Penn State's Luis Vargas (Rio Pedros, P.R.) has been added to the VISA American Cup, which will be held this weekend at New York's Madison Square Garden. Vargas will miss Penn State's meet this weekend with William & Mary to compete in the VISA Cup and is preparing for the 2004 Olympics, where he will represent his home country of Puerto Rico.

Vargas was a 2003 NCAA All-American after finishing sixth on both the high bar and the parallel bars. This summer he earned a bronze at the Pan American Games on the pommel horse. One of Penn State¨ªs all-arounders and a contender to earn All-America status again this season, Vargas is currently a sophomore.

The No. 5 Penn State' men's gymnastics team meets No. 13 Williams & Mary this Saturday at Rec Hall at 3 p.m. The first 1,000 people through the doors will receive a Kevin Tan (Fremont, Calif.) key ring to honor the senior's NCAA championship last season. Tan is currently ranked first in the country on the apparatus.
