Follow PSU Men's Gymnastics:

GoPSUSports.com caught up with senior men's gymnast Ludwig Kern to find out more about the Annapolis, Md., native. Here's what the 2003 All-American had to say:

Q: What do you do to stay calm and focused at critical times?
A: I pray

Q: Why did you choose to attend this university?
A: Penn State has some of the best gymnastics facilities and coaching in the world in my opinion. It also has a solid engineering department and a nice college town atmosphere.

Q: What are some of the things that you wanted to accomplish before your college career is over?
A: I wanted to compete in the all-around, become an All-American, and win a team national title. I have been very blessed to be able to do all three.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges that you¡¯ve had to overcome?
A: I have been constantly injured. The worst has been my wrist which has been a chronic problem for the past 3 years or so.

Q: As a kid what athlete or role model did you look up to and why?
A: As a kid I looked up to James Mlynarski, an older guy on my club team. He worked incredibly hard and encouraged others to do their best.

Q: How did you first get involved with your sport and why?
A: When I was 4 years old one of my friends wanted to try gymnastics but didn't know anyone else there so my mom signed me up too.

Q: What is your favorite moment during a competition and why?
A: Performing a routine that I know I am well prepared for is my favorite moment during a competition, especially when I know the team needs me. From the time I salute the judge I am enjoying myself because I know I will do my best. Sticking the dismount at the end of a good high bar routine is the best single moment.

Q: What are some of the difficulties in competing in your sport at a high level that the average fan may not be aware of?
A: It is possible to spend more time being injured, doing rehab, and fighting back throughout a gymnastics career than being healthy.

Q: How much do you rely on your teammates both during competition and in your life?
A: I rely a great deal on my teammates during competition. When I have confidence in my teammates I am able to relax a lot more and perform better. My teammates are also good friends.

Q: What are some of your other favorite sports?
A: I like skiing, waterskiing, volleyball, soccer, street hockey, baseball, and football. I like to play these sports with my friends when I have time.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: Good question!

Q: What do you do to kick back and unwind after a tough competition?
Hang out with my teammates and friends that came to watch me compete. I also go out to dinner with my family when they are able to come.

Q: What is the biggest thing you have learned during competition that will aid you in other areas of your life?
A: Focus
