Four Men's Gymnasts Compete at the Winter Cup Challenge This Weekend

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., February 6, 2003 - Four Penn State men's gymnastics will compete against 100 of the nation's top gymnasts at the Winter Cup Challenge at the Las Vegas Sports Center in Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 7-8. The event is sponsored by USA Gymnastics and top performers will earn one of three remaining spots on the U.S. National Team.

All-American's Kevin Donohue (Saddle River, N.J.) and Kevin Tan (Fremont, Calif.), and senior Matt Abboud (Dayton, Maine) are making the trip to Las Vegas for the second-straight year. Last year, Donohue placed 11th overall (51.100) in the all-around and Abboud was 23rd (49.400), recording a top-10 score on floor with an 8.500. Tan won the rings event on the first night of the competition, posting a 9.500.

Freshman Luis Vargas (San Piedras, P.R.), who is tied for fourth in the nation in the all-around, will also join his three teammates in Las Vegas.

The first night of competition on Friday, Feb. 7, consists of two all-around finals sessions. The top eight from either of the two sessions on each apparatus advances to the event finals on Saturday, Feb. 8.
