Men's Gymnastics Tops Temple in 2006 Home Opener
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 13, 2006 - Led by freshman Casey Sandy (Brampton, Ont.), No. 5 Penn State defeated 13th-ranked Temple Friday night in a dual meet, 202.450-190.050. In his Rec Hall debut, the reigning Big Ten Men's Gymnast of the Week won three events en route to his second consecutive all-around victory of the season.
Sandy took first in the pommel horse (9.350), the parallel bars (8.350), and the high bar (9.050) to lift Penn State's record to 2-0 on the season. For his efforts, the freshman all-arounder received the Gene Wettstone Award, a honor bestowed upon the most outstanding performer of the meet.
Sophomore Vladi Klurman (North Miami Beach, Fla.) also played a major role in helping Penn State remain undefeated. Klurman placed first in the rings and second in the pommel horse and the all-around. He also established a new career high in the vault, receiving a 9.100 to nab third place.
Chad Buczek (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Santiago Lopez (Cibola del Mar, Mex.) also won events for the Nittany Lions. Buczek took first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.100. Lopez demonstrated why he was an All-American in the vault in 2005, winning the event with an impressive 9.500. Lopez also earned third place in the parallel bars.
Penn State will face its sternest challenge of the young 2006 season next week when the Nittany Lions venture to Ann Arbor, Mich. to meet No. 6 Michigan in a dual meet. The Lions and the Wolverines will open the Big Ten season on Sat., Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
