Abboud, Benas, Tan Winners at West Point Open
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., January 12, 2002 ¡ª Penn State men¡¯s gymnasts junior Matt Abboud (Dayton, Maine), senior Adam Benas (Latham, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Tan (Fremont, Calif.) each took home first place in their respective events at the West Point Open individual finals on Saturday at Christl Arena.
The individual finals conclude the two-day event which began on Friday. The Nittany Lions won its fifth-straight team title at the West Point Open with a score of 209.500. Benas, who won the high bar last night with a score of 9.250, won the same event, recording a 9.050. Abboud qualified for the pommel horse, rings and parallel bars competition. He was a winner on the parallel bars posting an 8.800 improving on the 8.650 mark he registered on Friday en route to a first-place showing. He also placed third on the pommel horse (8.750) and eighth on rings (8.100). Tan competed on two events Saturday. He recorded a 9.600 for the second-straight day to dominate the rings competition. He also finished ninth on horse. Junior Kevin Donohue (Saddle River, N.J.) had a solid outing, as well, recording two second-place finishes on the floor (8.900) and parallel bars (8.700). Freshman Kyle Fernandez (Stratford, Conn.) followed up his performance on rings at the team competition with a second-place finish at the event finals (9.100). Junior Duke Van Vleet (Safety Harbor, Fla.) also notched a second-place finish posting an 8.900 on the high bar. Penn State is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Nittany Lions open the home slate against Massachusetts in a double dual with the Penn State women who take on Denver. The meet begins at 7 p.m. at Rec Hall.
