Four Men¡¯s Gymnasts Win Individual Events at West Point Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., January 12, 2003 ¡ª Four Penn State men¡¯s gymnasts took home first place at the individual event finals of the West Point Open on Saturday at Christl Arena in New York. Junior Kevin Tan won the rings title for the second-straight year scoring a 9.550.

The winner of the all-around, freshman Luis Vargas won the high bar competition with an 8.950, improving on his previous night¡¯s score of 8.600. He was also fourth on horse (8.500) and vault (8.900), and second on parallel bars (8.900).

Senior Kevin Donohue scored a 9.300 to take first-place honors on vault while finishing third on floor with an 8.800.

Senior captain Jose Palacios won on parallel bars for the second-straight night. He earned a 9.000 to take first. He came in second behind Vargas with an 8.700 on high bar and placed seventh on floor with an 8.050.

Sophomore Ed Seward earned fourth place on floor with an 8.750 and classmate Ludwig Kern tied for fifth on horse, posting an 8.350. Rings specialist sophomore Kyle Fernandez recorded a 9.050 to place fifth and sophomore Steve Tobin posted an 8.350, tying for sixth overall.

The Nittany Lions are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Navy Open. The meet is slated for 3 p.m. Host Navy and William & Mary will also participate in the meet.
