Men's Golf Defeats Three Ranked Opponents at GCAA National Match Play Championship
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; November 17, 2004 - The Penn State men's golf team defeated the tenth-seed UCLA Bruins in the consolation final of the GCAA National Match Play Tournament on Tuesday held at the Mission Inn - El Campeon Golf Course in Howie in the Hills Fla. The 16th seeded Nittany Lions halved the match with UCLA (2-2-1) but defeated the Bruins in a tiebreaker winning four holes to two.
Second-seed Oklahoma State upset first-seed Georgia Tech in the championship match of the tournament (4-0-1). Senior Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) defeated Daniel Im by three holes, as he was victorious in all four of his matches in the tournament. Ted Neville (Oklahoma City, Okla.) dropped Kevin Chappell by one hole to claim victory for Penn State while freshman Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) halved his match with John Poucher. Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) fell to Peter Campbell by one hole and junior Marco Poccia (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was defeated by Chris Heintz. Penn State will begin a three-month break before travelling back to Howie in the Hills, Fla. for the Irish Spring Tournament to kick off the spring schedule on Mar. 7. The Nittany Lions will then travel to Humble, Texas from Mar. 18-20 for the Hall of Fame tournament hosted by the University of Texas.
