Men's Golf Takes 10th Place at the Memphis Intercollegiate

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; October 5, 2004 - The Penn State Men's Golf team finished in 10th place in the 16-team Memphis Intercollegiate held at the Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tenn. The Nittany Lions shot a 306 in the final round of the tournament to finish with a total three round score of 906 (+42). Host university, Memphis, took first place in the tournament finishing with an 873 (+9). Xavier University jumped to second place after finishing with an 880(+16) followed by the University of Central Florida (+23), Louisville (+24) and Mississippi (+25) to complete the top five teams.

Senior Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) finished both days of the tournament in 12th place leading all Nittany Lion golfers. His final score of 219 (+3) was just one stroke shy of a 7th place tie. Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) ended his tournament in a tie for 25th place after shooting a 225 (+9). Junior Marco Poccia (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed in a tie for 53rd after firing a 232 (+16) while senior Ted Neville (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) finished in a tie for 62nd with a total 234 (+18). Freshman Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) completed his second tournament as a Nittany Lion with a final score of 235 (+19).

Allan Thomas of Memphis took first place individually after shooting a 214 (-2). Jordan Dempsey of Ole Miss and Neal Grusczynski of Xavier shared second place as both golfers finished with a final score of 216 (E).

The Nittany Lions will next be in action from Oct. 16-17 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Penn/Big 5 Classic. The team will then compete in the GCAA National Match Play tournament held in Howie in the Hills, Fla. Starting on Sunday, November 14th.
