Penn State Men's Golf Team Captures First Win of Season at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout
Ruther Glen, Va., September 26, 2006 - The Penn State men's golf team tied Louisville University at 13-under par for a share of the Mattaponi Springs Shootout title Tuesday in Ruther, Glen, Va. The two teams played a one-hole playoff but remained in a tie and finished together atop the leaderboard with three-round totals of 851. Penn State (288-278-285), down one shot to Louisville going into Tuesday, shot three-under as a team Tuesday to forge the tie with the Cardinals. Fourteen teams entered the Shootout at the Mattaponi Springs Golf Club, a 6,911-yard, par-72 course. Freshman Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) led all Penn State golfers at seven-under par 209 after firing a 70 during the final round of play and claimed a tie for sixth place. Sophomore Chad Bricker (Waynesboro, Pa.) shot two-over par 74 on Tuesday, but ended the tournament at six-under 210 to finish tied for eighth. Junior Robert Rohanna tied for 20th (218) while freshman Jim Markovitz tied for 30th (220) and junior Harvin Groft was tied for 44th (224). Penn State will return to the links on October 9-10 in Fairfax, Calif. for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the University of California. Final tournament results can be found here.
