Nittany Lion Golfers Open Season with Solid Showing at Northern Intercollegiate

State College, Pa. ¨C September 21, 2003 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion men¡¯s golf team opened up the 2003-04 season with a solid performance at the Northern Intercollegiate held at the University of Michigan this weekend. Penn State finished in a tie for fourth in the 15-team event.

Sophomore Marco Poccia (Sarasota Springs, N.Y.), who was not entered as a scorer for Penn State, had an outstanding tournament in his first as a Nittany Lion, shooting a 67 on the tournament¡¯s final day today for a 212 (minus-1) total, good enough for fourth place alone. Poccia was one of only four players under par. Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) and Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) each shot 221, which had them tied for 22nd as Penn State's top scorers. Senior Ted Neville (Oklahoma City, Okla.) managed to bounce back from a 76 on Friday to post two 74¡¯s and finish in a tie for 33rd with a 224.

The Nittany Lions totaled 886 at the event, tying Miami, Ohio, for fourth. Xavier won the tournament with an 853, with Big Ten foes Indiana (863) and Ohio State (847) finishing in second and third. Penn State¡¯s fourth place finish had them ahead of Big Ten opponents Wisconsin (888, 7th), Purdue (892, 11th), Michigan (895, 13th), and Iowa (898, 15th).

Penn State will return to action October 3-4 at the Temple Invitational.
