McDonagh, Miller Edged Out at U.S. Amateur

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Senior Tommy McDonagh (Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Michael Miller (Brewster, N.Y.) were defeated in the first round of match play at the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship today at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Heading into match play, McDonagh was seeded at No. 33 and lost to No. 34 Brad Benjamin of Rockford, Ill., 5 & 6. Miller who was seeded No. 58 lost to the No. 7 seed Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga, Calif.
Both Nittany Lions posted outstanding stroke-play scores in the two qualifying rounds to advance to match play where the 213-player field was narrowed down to 64. McDonagh shot rounds of 71-75 (+3) to advance to the 64 cut while Miller made the cut by posting 73-75 (+5).
McDonagh and Miller will head back to Happy Valley to join the rest of their team for practice before the 2010 fall season gets started.
