Former Golfer Leon Advances To Match Play At U.S. Amateur Championship
CHASKA, Minn., Aug. 23, 2006 - Former Penn State standout Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) posted a two-round total of three-over par 146 in stroke play to again advance into the field of 64 in the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship in Chaska, Minn. Leon, a 2005 Penn State graduate who owns the third best career scoring mark in Nittany Lion history, posted an opening round 72 on the Chaska Town Course (6,843 yards, par 71) and a second round 74 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club (7,473 yards, par 72) to tie for 37th among a field of 310 golfers in stroke play. Billy Horschel claimed medalist honors posting a two-round total of 138, including a USGA record 12-under par 60 in his opening round on the Chaska Course. Leon, a quarterfinalist in last year's U.S. Amateur, was scheduled to tee of at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday in his opening round match play contest against Richie Ramsay who shot a one-over par 144 in stroke play to finish tied for 18th. Match play continues through Sunday finishing with a 36-hole final to determine the U.S. Amateur Champion.
