Foley Finishes Second At Met Amateur Championship Played at Famed Baltusrol
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Aug. 10, 2006 - Penn State freshman-to-be Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) continued an outstanding summer of golf mounting the biggest comeback in recent tournament history before falling one-up in match-play to Tommy McDonagh in the final of the Metropolitan Amateur Championship outside of New York City. Playing on the famed Baltusrol upper and lower courses in Springfield, N.J., Foley twice trailed by five holes in the 36-hole final match before winning holes 11, 12, 14 and 17 down the stretch to draw within one. Foley's par on the 612-yard, par-5 17th capped a charge of four wins in the final eight holes and put the match in doubt going into the famed par-5 18th on the lower course. McDonagh hit his third shot to within 10 feet of the hole to secure the win and become, at 17, the youngest champion in the tournament's history. Foley advanced to the final by winning three match-play rounds on the week after advancing into the match-play field of 16 from stroke play. He won his first two match-play duals handily, 5 and 3 & 4 and 3, before going to 19 holes to claim the third. Foley tied for third during the stroke play portion of the event posting a 4-over-par 146 over two rounds. He posted a three-over 74 on the upper course and a one-over 72 on the lower. Baltusrol, a Robert Trent Jones designed course, has hosted the U.S. Open seven times (1903, 1915, 1936, 1954, 1967, 1980, and 1993), the 2005 PGA Championship, the U.S. Amateur Championship four times (1904, 1926, 1946, and 2000), and the U.S. Women's Open twice (1961 and 1985).
