Foley Advances To Round Of 16 At U.S. Public Links Championship

BREMERTON, Wash., July 14, 2006 - Penn State freshman-to-be Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) saw a terrific run end Thursday night at the 81st U.S. Public Links Championship at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Foley, who shot a 2-over-par 146 in stroke play to advance to the match play round, defeated his first two match play opponents to reach the round of 16 but fell Thursday night, 4 and 3, to Sihwan Kim of Buena Park, Calif.

Foley was one of 64 players from the original field of 155 entrants to advance to the match play tournament that will decide the U.S. Public Links champion on the par-72 course. Foley carded rounds of 74 and 72 to tie for 27th after the stroke play rounds.

Foley came out of the gates strong in the match play round defeating his first round opponent, Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu, Hawaii, 3 and 2 before moving on to face No. 2 seed Mitch Cohlmia of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the second round. Cohlmia tied for the lead during the stroke play round firing a 67 and 70 for a 7-under-par round of 137.

Foley had the upper hand in match play however. He took the lead with a par on the first whole and never trailed. A birdie on the par-5, 14th hole gave Foley the lead for good and he holed out for eagle on the par-4, 461-yard 17th hole to defeat Cohlmia, 3 and 1, to reach the round of 16.
