Foley Advances To Match Play At U.S. Public Links Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., July 12, 2006 - Penn State freshman-to-be Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) teed off at 10:30 Wednesday morning in the first round of the match play portion of the 81st U.S. Public Links Championship at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Foley's first round opponent is Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu, Hawaii.

A field of 155 entrants was trimmed to 64 for the match play tournament that will decide the U.S. Public Links champion after two days of stroke play on the par-72 course. Foley carded rounds of 74 and 72 to finish at 2-over-par 146 and in a tie for 27th after the stroke play rounds. Mitch Cohlmia (67-70) of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Justin Metzger (69-68) of Knoxville, Tenn. won the stroke play portion firing 7-under-par rounds of 137.

If Foley defeats Fujikawa in his first match play round he will face Cohlmia in the second round. That match would tee off at 8:42 a.m. Thursday morning. Six rounds of match play must be won to claim the U.S. Public Links Championship.
