June 29, 2011
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State golfers T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) and Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) will advance to match play after making the cut at the conclusion of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
First round play for the Championship commenced Monday for the 156 golfers representing 42 states and seven countries. The poor weather conditions proved to present a challenge for the golfers, with only one competitor Devon Purser of Clearfield, Utah posting a 1-under par score of 69.
The improved conditions for Tuesday's second round, presented a greater ease for the golfers who posted lower scores and ultimately raised the stakes for passage to the final round. Howe proved to be a competitor who improved between rounds posting a 1-over par 72 in the final round to give him a two-round total of 147 (75-72), tying him for 27.
DeGol displayed consistency as he shot just 1-over his first round total of 72 in the second round. Degol's two-round total of 145 (72-73) placed him tied for 10 at the conclusion of stroke play.
Howe and DeGol will begin match play at 11:30 a.m. and 11:10 a.m., respectively, on Wednesday. For more information about the Championship, visit USGA.org.
