Abbott, Latowski & Turton Named All-District
NORMAN, Okla.- Penn State golfers Matt Abbott (Endwell, N.Y.), Andy Latowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Jeff Turton (Ithaca, N.Y.) were selected to the 12-member GCAA All-District II team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced. "To have Matt, Andy, and Jeff honored as top players in District II is a measure of our consistent success this year," head coach Greg Nye said. Abbott, a senior, concluded his illustrious collegiate career as Penn State's career scoring leader (73.68). The 2001 Ping Honorable Mention All-American also earned District II Player-of-the-Year accolades as a junior. A two-time all-Big Ten honoree, Abbott earned Conference Golfer-of-the-Week on March 22. He captured medalist honors at the Northern Intercollegiate and the Big Red Classic. The team leader with a 71.94 stroke average, Abbott finished under par in seven tourneys as a senior. Latowksi, a junior, earned GCAA All-America Scholar honors last week. The Verizon Academic all-district All-American captured medalist honors twice during the season, winning the Princeton Invitational and the Rutherford Intercollegiate. The Academic all-Big Ten honoree finished second in team scoring with a 73.33 average. Turton, a junior, also earned the prestigious GCAA All-America Scholar honor. The Academic all-Big Ten honoree had three Top 10 finishes in the spring season. He finished third in team scoring with a 74.86. The Nittany Lions, which won four tournaments during 2000-01, were the top seed in District II at the NCAA East Regional during their 12th consecutive NCAA appearance in May.
