Three Men's Golfers Selected as GCAA All-America Scholars
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., June 7, 2001 --- Penn State golfers Andy Latowski, Jeff Turton and Josh Dawes have been named to the 2000-01 GCAA Division I All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced. Penn State and Yale are the only schools to have three golfers named to this prestigious honor. At the 14th Annual Academic Achievement Banquet in March, coach Greg Nye's team received the team award for the highest grade-point average in 1999-2000. The three juniors who received this recognition competed in every competition this season, are all majoring in business and earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades. A junior, Latowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) shot a then-career-low of 69 while placing fifth at the Liberty Spring Classic. One week after that competition, he captured his first collegiate medalist honor at the Princeton Invitational with a 141, one under par for the tournament. And then for the second straight week, he was a medalist at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, shooting a 212, (-4) while establishing a career-best with a 68 in the second round. Latowski also was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District Spring At-Large Team. Turton (Ithaca, N.Y.) tied for seventh at the Georgetown Invitational with a 152 , but had three top-10 placements during the spring season. He placed sixth by shooting even (144) at the Liberty Spring Classic after shoot a career-best 69 in the first round. At the Princeton Invitational, Turton tied for fourth with a 143, one over par. Dawes (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot a career-best (69 ) in the Provident Invitational's second round. He had three top-20 finishes during in the fall. The GCAA All-America Scholars are recognized for their performances athletically and scholastically. To qualify for this honor, student-athletes must have junior or senior status, maintain a minimum grade-point average, compete in 75 percent of his team's varsity competitions and maintain a minimum stroke average set by the GCAA. Penn State concluded its season with a 16th-place showing at the NCAA East Regional competition. Earlier this week, senior Matt Abbott was named a GCAA honorable mention All-American.
