Men's Golf Finishes 15th at NCAA Championships

Hot Springs, Va., June 4, 2004 ¨C The Penn State men's golf team registered a score of 300 today in the final round of the NCAA Championships, for a tournament total of 289-291-290-300-1170. Eleven of the 15 squads carded their highest tournament rounds today, as the Nittany Lions fell from a 13th place tie to their final position of 15th.

Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) carded a 1-over 71 for a tournament total of 69-69-70-71-279 (-1). Leon finished the tournament in a sixth place tie overall and was one of just seven golfers to shoot par or better for the tournament.

Junior Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) carded a 5-over 75 and ended the tournament with a total of 76-74-73-75-298 (+18). Pieczynski finished in a 60th place tie, while Ted Neville (Oklahoma City, Okla.; 74-75-74-77-300) wrapped up a 65th place tie, Marco Poccia (Saratoga Springs, NY; 72-79-73-77-301) a 68th place tie and Jason Pannone (East Greenwich, RI; 74-73-76-79-302) a 72nd place finish.

In making yesterday¡¯s 15-team cut, Penn State topped its previous best NCAA Championships finish (16th in 1969), defeating four of the nation¡¯s top 15 teams in the process (No. 2 and defending national champion Clemson, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Arizona State and No. 10 TCU). It¡¯s the second week in a row the Nittany Lions defeated some of the nation¡¯s top teams, as they beat seven of the top eight teams in the country on their way to a second place finish at the NCAA East Regional.

Cal, the only team under par in the final round (-1), won the team title by six strokes over UCLA, which struggled to a team score of 293 in the final round and finished the tournament at 20 over par. Rounding out the top five squads were: Arizona (+28), Texas (+29) and Georgia Tech (+31).

On the individual leader board, UNLV's Ryan Moore led the way with his 13-under 267, with Bill Haas of Wake Forest (-7), Chris Nallen of Arizona (-7), Michael Putnam of Pepperdine (-4) and Travis Johnson of UCLA (-3) rounding out the top five.
