State College, Pa., May 26, 2000 - Gavin Carscallen (Calgary, Alberta), a senior on this year's Penn State men's swimming and diving team, will be competing at the Canadian Olympic Trials on Monday, May 29 and Friday, June 2 in Montreal, Quebec. Carscallen, a tri-captain of the 1999-2000 Nittany Lion squad which posted an all-time best 19th place finish at the NCAA Championships, will attempt to qualify for the Canadian National Team in the 100 meter backstroke and the 100 meter butterfly. He will swim the 100 meter backstroke on May 29 and follow that with the 100 meter butterfly on June 2. "Gavin has been training extremely hard since the NCAA Championships and I am extremely excited to see what he can do at the trials," Penn State Head Coach Peter Brown said. Carscallen was a member of Penn State's 200 medley relay team that won the Big Ten title and set a Donald B. Canham Natatorium record with a time of 1:28.27. The Canadian Olympic Trials is the official selection meet for the Canadian Olympic Team.
