State College, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team tied for 18th out of 27 teams at the NCAA East Regional in Roswell, Ga. The Nittany Lions shot a final 54-hole score of 922 (+58), which tied them with Virginia and Duke. After a strong opening round of 295 on Thursday, Penn State struggled the next two rounds with scores of 316 and 311.

Senior Jim Fuller (Muskogee, Okla.) missed making the National Championships as an individual by a mere two strokes. Fuller tied for 18th, but his score of 5-over 221 was only two shots behind Eric Jorgenson of Michigan State, who was the final individual qualifier.

Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) finished tied for 81st with a 54-hole score of 232 (+16). Leon's teammate, Jeff Turton (Ithaca, N.Y.) rebounded from a tough opening round to shoot a final score of 238 (+22), which tied him for 104th.

Clemson and Georgia Tech tied for the team title with scores of 12-over 876. Clemson had entered the final round one stroke in from of Georgia Tech. UNC finished second with a score of 13-over 877.

Clemson golfer D.J. Trahan led the tournament from start to finish, winning the individual title by three strokes with a score of 6-under 210. Bob Cherry of UNC placed second with a score of 213 (-3).

Penn State's 2001-2002 season is now complete.
