Penn State Finishes East Regional In 17th Place; Pieczynski Top Nittany Lion Finisher

State College, Pa. ¨C May 17, 2003 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion golf team ended its season with a 17th place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championships played at the Auburn University Club this weekend. The Lions fell from 14th to 17th place on the day¡¯s final day of competition.

Penn State ended the tournament plus-32 with scores of 305-296-305 for a total of 896. Clemson ran away with the team title, posting a minus-25, a full nine shots better than second place Georgia Tech, which was minus-16. Tech¡¯s Troy Matteson won the individual crown with an overall score of 201, which was 15-under.

The Nittany Lions were led by sophomore Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.), who shot a second straight even par round of 72. His scores of 75-72-72 were good enough for a 219, which was tied for 39th. Jim Fuller, who had a superb four-under round of 68 yesterday, shot six-over 78 today and was the second-best Penn State finisher. His 77-68-78 was good enough for a 223, which was tied for 59th.
