State College, Pa. - May 15, 2005 - The Penn State University men's golf team placed eighth the 14th annual Perry Maxwell Invitational at Dornick Hills Country Club in Norman, Okla., today. The Nittany Lions completed the three-round, 11-team event today, firing a 286. Penn State shot scores of 288-27-286 for a plus-12 852. Oklahoma State won the tournament with a 25-under 815.

Nittany Lion junior Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) paced Penn State with an 18th-place finish. Leon, who recently earned All-Big Ten laurels, shot rounds of 75-70-71 for a plus-six 216. Freshman Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) finished 27th (73-73-73=219) at plus-nine while classmate Harvin Groft (State College, Pa.) was plus-12 with scores of 74-73-75=222. Augusta State led most of the final round after counting four birdies on the par-5 6, had to watch its advantage slip away after counting bogeys on 15 and 17.

Georgia (823, -17) finished third, SMU (825, -15) and Tulsa tied for fourth, Oklahoma (827, -13) slipped from a share of the lead to sixth, Auburn (841, +1) placed seventh, Penn State (852, +12) placed eighth, Texas-Arlington (859, +19) placed ninth, Colorado (862, +22) placed 10th and Oklahoma City (866, +26) completed the field that had a number of teams with home-state players. Penn State now readies itself for its 16th straight appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Penn State, the top seed out of the Mid-Atlantic Region, will compete in the three-day event in Nashville on May 19-21.
