State College, Pa. ¨C May 15, 2003 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion golf team shot a 17-over 305 on thee first day of the NCAA East Regional Championships at Auburn University. The performance has the team in 18th-place after the first day of the three-day tournament. Only the top ten teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) led Penn State with a solid plus-three round of 75, good enough for a tie for 55th place. Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) was next for PSU with a76 and was tied for 69th. South Alabama¡¯s Gareth Maybin and Tennessee¡¯s Ross McGowan led the field with minus-five rounds of 67. Tennessee and Georgia Tech hold the team lead after day one with minus-seven 281¡¯s.

Action will continue at the Auburn University Golf Club on Friday and Saturday.
