The top 11 teams and top three individuals advance to the 2001 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., on May 30-June 2. 2001 Penn State NCAA Regional Roster
Head Coach: Greg Nye (ninth year) NCAA TOURNEY HISTORY: The Nittany Lions have participated in every NCAA East Regional since 1989. In 1996, the squad advanced to the NCAA Championship, where it finished 29th overall. The Lions' berth in the final wasn't only monumental for Penn State, but for the entire East region as the Lions became the first team in District II (and District I) history to reach the national championship. ONE MORE TIME: Two of the five Nittany Lion participants also played in the NCAA East Regional a year ago. Senior Matt Abbott (Endwell, N.Y.) and junior Jeff Turton (Ithaca, N.Y.) participated in the NCAA East Regional in Moosic, Pa. Abbott placed 56th with a 228, while Turton shot a 241. TOUGH DRAW: In the first two rounds of NCAA regional action, the No. 1 seeded Nittany Lions of District II will tee off with No. 2 seed Clemson from District 3 North and No. 2 seed Florida from District 3 South. The Tigers are ranked No. 3 nationally this week by GolfWeek.com, while the Gators are No. 4. LAST OUTING: In its last meet, Penn State finished ninth at the Big Ten Championship, held in Champaign, Ill. Northwestern claimed the team title as Luke McDonald captured medalist honors. All-Big Ten honoree Matt Abbott paced the Lions, shooting a 288 for a share of 14th place. Despite the finish, Penn State shot its best-ever at the Conference meet with a 1,169, breaking the school record for 72 holes set in 1999 at the same event. SPRING STATISTICS: Senior Matt Abbott continues his outstanding collegiate campaign, leading the Nittany Lions with a 72.00 stroke average this spring. Junior Andy Latowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) averages 72.50 strokes, while junior Jeff Turton averages 73.83. AGAINST THE REGIONAL FIELD: Joining the Nittany Lions in NCAA regional play are national runner-up and ACC champion Georgia Tech, SEC champion Georgia, and 10 additional conference champs. Penn State has already competed against nine of the 26 squads. Nine of those competitors met at last fall's NCAA Preview tournament. The Nittany Lions have seen Xavier the most, competing in six of the same events this season. PSU has also squared off against Seton Hall four times. HEAD COACH GREG NYE: In his ninth year as head coach, Greg Nye has guided the Nittany Lions through post-season play every year. Just the fifth coach in PSU men's golf history, Nye's led his squad to 38 tournament titles, four this season alone, during his tenure. The two-time NCAA District II Coach-of-the-Year guided Penn State to the NCAA Championship in 1996, the school's first berth since 1987. A four-time All-American as a player, Nye paced the College of Wooster to the 1975 Division III national championship title, where he placed eighth individually. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Golf runs in the blood of the Nye family. Head coach Greg Nye's father, Bob, coached golf (and soccer) at Wooster from 1963-96. The now retired patriarch served as president of the Golf Coaches Association of America and was a 1989 Hall of Fame inductee. In 2000, Bob received the GCAA's highest distinction with the Honor Award for his lifetime contributions to collegiate golf. Greg's brother, Scott, is the head professional at the prestigious Merion Golf Club in Philadelphia, while his youngest brother, Gary, is an assistant professional at the Burning Tree Golf Club in Washington, D.C. STRICTLY BUSINESS: Four of the Nittany Lions competing at the NCAA East Regional are business majors. Senior Matt Abbott and junior Josh Dawes are studying business administration, while juniors Josh Dawes and Andy Latowski are focusing on marketing. Sophomore Jim Fuller, however, is studying turfgrass science. SMART COOKIES: At the 14th Annual Academic Achievement Banquet in March, the men's golf team received the team award for the highest grade-point average in 1999-2000. Among the more than 700 Penn State student-athletes on 29 varsity teams, the overall average team g.p.a. was 3.05 with 18 teams earning an average of 3.00 or better.
