Penn State MenĄ¯s Golf Team Earns NCAA East Regional Bid

University Park, Pa.; May 7, 2007 ¨C The Nittany Lion golf team, ranked 79th in the nation by Golfweek, earned an NCAA Regional bid Monday ¨C its 14th Regional bid in 15 seasons under head coach Greg Nye. Penn State will compete against 26 other teams in the East Regional on May 17-19. The tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech, will be held at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. The top seed in the region is Georgia; Penn State is seeded 17th.

The Nittany Lions enter the East Regional with three wins on the season, including a victory at last weekendĄ¯s Rutherford Intercollegiate. Host Penn State shot rounds of 289-289-316 (894), beating the next best team, Austin Peay, by 12 strokes. The Nittany Lions also claimed titles at the VCU/Mattaponi Spring Shootout in October and at the Marshall Invitational in April.

The win at the Marshall Invitational marked the 50th title for Nye in his 15 years at Penn State. After the tournament, the Nittany Lions were named an honorable mention for National Team of the Week by Golfweek.

Penn State junior Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.), a first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection, anchored the Nittany Lions lineup this season. He earned medallist honors three times this season: at the Georgetown Invitational, at the Marshall Invitational and at the Rutherford Intercollegiate last weekend. He recorded five consecutive top-10 finishes and eight on the season. Rohanna, named the Big Ten MenĄ¯s Co-Golfer of the Week on April 11, participated in the 2005 East Regional where he tied for 77th place.

Freshman Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.), the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, has also been a key contributor to Penn StateĄ¯s success this season. Foley, a second-team All-Big Ten Conference selection, recorded five top-10 finishes in his freshman campaign. His best finish came at the Marshall Invitational where he placed second behind Rohanna.

The top 10 teams from each of the three regions will advance to the 2007 NCAA Championships. The NCAA Championships will be held May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
