Nittany Lion Golf Team Wins 31st Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; May 6, 2007 ¨C Penn State junior Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) earned medalist honors for the third time this year, and the Penn State men¡¯s golf team won the 31st annual Rutherford Intercollegiate ¨C the 14th time the Nittany Lions have won the tournament in the last 16 years. Rohanna, a first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection, shot rounds of 71-73-73 (217) and won the tournament at one-over par ¨C his fifth straight top-10 finish. Rohanna, who tied for fourth at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, posted 11 birdies and 32 pars and led the field in par-4 scoring (+1, 4.03). Ranked 95th in the nation by Golfweek, Rohanna now has 13 top-10 finishes in his collegiate career. Host Penn State, ranked 80th in the nation by Golfweek, shot rounds of 289-289-316 (894) and defeated 11 other teams from the eastern part of the country. The Nittany Lions posted 47 birdies as a team ¨C the highest total of any team ¨C and finished at 30-over par, 12 strokes lower than runner-up Austin Peay. Austin Peay, coached by former Penn State assistant Kirk Kayden, fired rounds of 297-297-312 (906). Sixty-six players battled windy conditions and a tough course setup in the final round at the recently-renovated par-72, 7,228-yard Penn State Blue Course. The field average, which was 77.44 in the both of the first two rounds, raised to 82.55 in the final round. Wright State¡¯s Brandon Knutson, the runner-up in the individual standings, was the only player to shoot under-par in the final round. Knutson, who tied for 11th place at last year¡¯s Rutherford Intercollegiate, carded a 71 in the final round. Penn State sophomore Chad Bricker (Waynesboro, Pa.) tied for fourth place at seven-over par ¨C his best finish this season. Bricker sunk 13 birdies ¨C the most of any player in the field ¨C and posted scores of 73-70-80 (223). He also was the leader in par-5 scoring (-7, 4.42 average). Freshman Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) shot rounds of 72-71-82 (225) and tied for seventh place at nine-over par. Foley, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-Big Ten selection, finished with eight birdies and was among the leaders in par-4 (+6, 4.20) and par-5 scoring (-6, 4.50 average). Junior Harvin Groft (State College, Pa.) and freshman Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) finished in 14th and 26th place, respectively. Groft fired rounds of 73-75-81 (229), carded 10 birdies and finished at 13-over par. Markovitz shot rounds of 73-77-85 (235). Playing individually for the Nittany Lions were seniors Marco Poccia (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and David Dankmyer (Gibsonia, Pa.) as well as sophomore Matt Leon (Brampton, Ontario) and freshman Tyler Tarney (Galena, Ohio). Leon tied for 17th place at 16-over par after shooting rounds of 78-73-81 (232). Tarney and Poccia tied for 23rd and 27th place, respectively. Tarney finished at 234 (+18) wihle Poccia finished at 236 (+20). Dankmyer tied for 62nd place at 35-over par (251). Penn State will find out if it receives an NCAA Regional bid on Monday night.
