Nittany Lion Men¡¯s Golf Team Earns Spot in NCAA East Regional Championships
State College, Pa. ¨C May 6, 2003 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion men¡¯s golf team has earned one of 27 spots in the 2003 NCAA East Regional Championships. The bid will mark Penn State¡¯s 14th straight regional appearance.
The three-day event will take place on May 15-17 at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Alabama. The East Region is one of three regions in the nation. Ten teams and two individuals will advance from each regional competition to the 2003 NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. On May 28-31 Penn State is the No. 19 seed in the 27-team field, which is led by No. 1 seed Clemson. The rest of the Big Ten qualifies in the Central Region. Minnesota (No. 5 seed in the Central Region), Illinois (No. 9), Northwestern (No. 10), Michigan State (No. 17) and Ohio State (No. 21) round out the Big Ten teams getting bids. Indiana¡¯s Jeff Overton and Purdue¡¯s Peter Karmis were given individual invites to the Central region tourney as well. Penn State will compete in the 2003 Maxwell Tournament this weekend at Oklahoma University. The Nittany Lions of head coach Greg Nye are coming off a tenth place finish at last weekend¡¯s Big Ten Championships.
