Men's Golf Wins Rutherford Intercollegiate With Record-Setting Score
Click here for Golfstat.com results Final Results University Park, Pa., April 30, 2005 - The Penn State men's golf team set a Rutherford Intercollegiate 54-hole record, shooting a 277 today to finish with a first place score of 843 (-21) at the Penn State Blue Course. The previous record was set in 2003 when the Nittany Lions fired an 852. The Nittany Lions have claimed victory in the Rutherford 13 of the past 14 tournaments. John Eades of Maryland took first place individually shooting a 200 (-16) to lead the Terps to a second place victory. Towson University finished in third place shooting five strokes higher than Maryland with an 866 (+2). Four of the five Nittany Lions finished in the top ten individually. Freshman Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.) took second place with a 207 (-9) followed by senior Ted Neville (Oklahoma City, Okla.) who grabbed third place after shooting 209 (-7). Sophomore Marco Poccia (Sartoga Springs, N.Y.) shot a third round score of 68 to give him a score of 213 (-3) for the tournament, good enough for a tie in sixth place. Senior Mark Leon (Brampton, Ontario) finished one stroke behind Poccia to finish in a tie for eighth place and senior Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) took 32nd place with a 221 (+5). Penn State was also represented by four individual players in the tournament. Freshman Harvin Groft (State College, Pa.) fired a 217 (+1) to place 17th and junior David Dankmyer (Gibsonia, Pa.) finished in a tie for 47th with a score of 224 (+8). Sophomore John Aubrey (Butler, Pa.) shot a 226 (+10) to take the 54th spot and Brian Fitzpatrick (Harrison, N.Y.) fired a 237 (+21) to place 75th. The Nittany Lions will be back in action from May 6-8 when they travel to University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. to compete in the Big Ten Championship. Penn State will head to Ardmore, Okla. one week later for the Maxwell Intercollegiate.
