STATE COLLEGE, Pa.- Penn State men's golf will host the 25th Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate this week.

The Nittany Lions entertain 14 other squads at the par 72 Penn State Blue Course. The first 36 holes will tee off on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The final round is slated for Sunday, April 29 at 8 a.m.

Traditionally one of the top NCAA District II events, the Rutherford Intercollegiate annually features a top field of Eastern teams, as well as teams from around the nation. Established in 1975, Penn State has been dominant in the event, winning the team title 14 times, including the last nine titles and taking 10 individual medalist honors.

Last spring, Penn State captured the team title with a course record 871 from the 14-team field, followed by UNC-Wilmington (880), Ohio (882), and James Madison (885). The medalist was Nittany Lion Matt Abbott (Endwell, N.Y.), who shot a four-under 212.

Originally named the Nittany Lion Invitational, the tourney name was changed to the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 in honor of R.B. "Pop" Rutherford, Sr., the father of Penn State golf. He organized the first Penn State golf team and coached the Lions from 1922-49.

In the last two weeks, Penn State has captured the Liberty Classic and Princeton Invitational titles. Abbott, who averages a team-best 71.8, has finished in the Top 10 in every spring event, winning the Big Red Classic.
