UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s golf team finished the first 36 holes in the 54-hole Rutherford Intercollegiate in first place out of a field of 11 on the Blue Course in University Park, Pennsylvania.


The 31st-ranked Nittany Lions finished the first round with a five-under 279 to lead the field at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on their home course in.

Senior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), sophomore Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and freshman Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) paved the way for the Lions, all shooting subpar rounds after their first 18 holes. Dornes (2nd, 67), Miller (T4th, 69), and Huntzinger (T7, 70) were the only trio of teammates to all be in the top ten following the first round of play.

Seniors Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.)  and Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) shot 73 and 75 respectively in round one placing them in ties for 25th and 33rd.

Junior Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario), freshmen Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), Evan Santa (Edgewater, Md.), and Connor Raeman (Canandaiagua, N.Y.) all competed as individuals. Elliott, Dornes, and Santa all finished in a tie for 16th with a 72, while Raeman sits in a tie for 61st after a first round 80.


The Lions finished round two in the same fashion as the first, with the lead at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. Penn State finished day one of competition as the only team with two rounds under par after they shot a one-under 283 in the second round of 18 on the day.

Charles Huntzinger put himself in a tie for second place on the player leaderboard after a 4-under 67 to finish the day at a 5-under 137. Right behind him is JD Dornes who shot an even par second round putting him in a tie for possession of fourth place at four-under with 138.

Chris Houston followed up his first round with a one-under 70 to put him in a tie for 11th with a total of 143. Finishing one shot behind at 144 through 36 holes was Cole Miller who had a second round of 75 and is tied for 14th overall. Geoff Vartelas ended day one with 151 in total and in a tie for 45th.

Individually, Christian Elliott shot a 69 second round to sit in a tie for 8th at 141. Ryan Dornes shot his second 72 of the day to finish in a tie for 14th with a 144 heading into the final round. Evan Santa ended the day tied for 34th at 148 and Connor Raeman sits in 51st after a 153.

Behind the Nittany Lions on the team leaderboard is West Virginia with a 568, followed by Xavier at 572, and Connecticut at 575. Xavier’s Jose Montano sits atop the player leaderboard after a 66 and 70 on day one giving him a 136. One shot behind is Lloyd Jefferson Go from Seton Hall who is tied with Charles Huntzinger. JD Dornes is tied with Xavier’s Daniel Wetterich at 138.

Final round action will begin at 8:30 a.m.
