Men¡¯s Golf Team Takes Third Place at 37th Annual Kepler Intercollegiate for their Third Consecutive Top-Five Finish in Spring
COLUMBUS, Ohio; April 15, 2007 ¨C The Nittany Lion golf team finished in third place in the 16-team field at the 37th annual Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State, after shooting rounds of 296 and 310 for a two-round total of 606 (+32). Penn State has recorded a top-five finish in its last three tournaments including a win at last weekend¡¯s Marshall Invitational, garnering an honorable mention for National Team of the Week by Golfweek. The Nittany Lions finished 15 shots behind tournament winner Louisville ¨C ranked 20th in the nation by Golfweek.com ¨C and six shots behind runner-up Michigan State. Penn State topped eight other Big Ten teams in the final standings including last year¡¯s Big Ten champion Northwestern. Three Nittany Lion golfers finished in the top 14 including junior Robert Rohanna (Waynesburg, Pa.), freshman Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) and junior Harvin Groft (State College, Pa.). The tournament, hosted by Ohio State, was held at the 7,454-yard, par-71 OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio ¨C home of the 2007 Big Ten Championships. The event was originally scheduled to go 54 holes but was cut to 36 holes due to rainy conditions. Rohanna, last week¡¯s Big Ten Men¡¯s Co-Golfer of the Week, finished in third place at four-over par after shooting rounds of 71 and 75. He carded six birdies ¨C tied for second most of the tournament ¨C and 22 pars for a two-round total of 146, four shots behind winner Matt Harmon of Michigan State. Rohanna finished among the leaders in par-3 (+1, 3.13 average) and par-4 scoring (+3, 4.14 average). His top-10 finish is the ninth of his career. Foley finished tied for 11th place at nine-over par (151) after firing rounds of 73 and 78. Foley, who finished in the top-seven of the first three tournaments of the spring, sunk four birdies and tied for fourth place in par-5 scoring (-1, 4.83 average). Groft tallied 22 pars on his way to shooting rounds of 75 and 77. Groft finished at 10-over par with a two-round total of 152 and tied for 14th place for the second straight week. He was also among the leaders in par-3 (+1, 3.13 average) and par-4 scoring (+5, 4.23 average). Freshman Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) and sophomore Chad Bricker (Waynesboro, Pa.) both finished with a two-round total of 161 and tied for 53rd place at 19-over par. Markovitz recorded four birdies and shot rounds of 77 and 84 while Bricker posted rounds of 81 and 80. The Nittany Lions will return to the links next weekend at the Fossum Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State.
